Unwrap the bunch straight away, even when the paper still looks perfect. Damp kraft pressed against wet stem ends begins to sour, and the ribbon at the binding point squeezes the stems in exactly the place they need to stay open. Whatever the wrapping was doing on the road, it stops being useful the moment the box is indoors.
That first hour decides more than the flower did.
Trim two or three centimetres off each stem at an angle, and put each one into water as it is cut rather than laying it on the table until the rest are done. A blade works better than scissors, which crush the channels they are cutting through. Strip every leaf that would sit below the water line, because a leaf rotting under water spoils a vessel faster than anything else that goes into it. Fill the vase properly while you are at it: seven stems standing in a finger of water will have emptied it by morning.

Cool is the part of that instruction which needs translating here. The climate is humid tropical and the air runs at 25 to 33 °C, so the coolest place in a villa is usually the room with the air conditioning on, not the one with the window open. An interior wall suits the vase better than a table against the glass, since afternoon sun through a window heats the water long before it touches the petals.
What the road did before that hour
Deliveries run 90 to 180 minutes along the west coast, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. During monsoon showers and in evening hill traffic we add route time, which is honest planning rather than a delay, but it does mean the stems have been out of water longer than the clock on the order suggests.
