Kenyan roses in Phuket: what to check when the box is opened

Rose stems being checked one by one after a delivery arrives in Phuket

Grade is decided long before anyone sees a bouquet. Stems are sorted at the farm by length and head size, tied into bunches and packed, and everything after that point is logistics rather than selection.

The person opening the box in the workshop is the first one who can judge the flower instead of the label. That is where we catch what needs catching, and it takes about a minute a bunch.

Anyone receiving a delivery can run exactly the same checks.

The four things worth touching

  • The neck under the bud. Lift one stem by the middle and the head should stay level; if it tips, the stem has taken in air and the head will fold within a day or two.
  • The bud itself. Squeeze it gently between finger and thumb: a well grown flower feels solid and springs back, and that firm tightly wrapped petal is what this origin is known for.
  • The cut end. Pale and clean is right, while a dark rim or any slime means the stem sat too long in water nobody changed.
  • The outer petals. One or two coarse guard petals with a bruised edge are normal and come off at home, but a brown dry margin running through several layers means the flower was chilled badly or held somewhere warm.

None of those four checks needs any experience. They need the box open, which is the part people postpone.

A failed check is also worth acting on immediately rather than at the weekend. A tipping neck will not recover, and the sooner it is reported the easier it is to do something useful about it.

Why the box matters more on an island

Roses reach Phuket as imports, so every stem has already been through more handling than one bought near a farm. The checks above are not a formality here. They are how you find out what happened in transit, and they are the only stage where the answer is still visible.

Roses also travel dry, which is why we ask people to unwrap on arrival rather than in the evening. Every extra hour in the sleeve raises the chance of an air lock in the stem, and an air lock is what the neck test is really looking for.

Heat pushes in the same direction. At 25 to 33 °C a stem out of water loses moisture from the moment the box is sealed, so an hour left on a doorstep costs more here than the same hour would in a cool climate.

Delivery across the island

We cover the west coast in 90 to 180 minutes, from Patong and Kata to Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. From May to October the rains and the evening hill traffic add time, so we build the margin into the route.

Villa deliveries are the easiest for this flower, because somebody is usually there to take the box straight in. An airport arrival is the hardest, since the flowers wait in a warm car, and for those runs we cut tighter and pack for the wait.

Delivery hours are 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start at 2200 THB, and payment goes by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht.

"The complaint that arrives on day four is nearly always visible on day one. Nobody looked, because the box was pretty."

Recut every stem at a slant, strip the leaves that would sit below the water, and fill the vase deep rather than shallow. Kenyan roses repay that more than most, because a firm petal holds up well once the stem is properly drinking, and the whole point of the four checks is knowing on the first day whether it will.
