Songkran flowers in Phuket: colour in April light, and the limits of the week
The gift for this holiday is handed over indoors, in the morning, at close range. What surprises people is how differently colour behaves once that piece is carried out into the light of the season, which is wet, bright and unforgiving in a way that indoor light never is.

What reads well in April light
Warm yellow and white are the shades tied to this holiday, and both hold up against that light rather than dissolving into it. Warm tones in general keep their weight in strong sun. Pale lilac and soft blue do the opposite, washing out towards grey in any photograph taken outdoors around noon, which is exactly when most of these photographs get taken. Thai orchids and chrysanthemums give the warm end of the range without fading through the day. Hydrangeas carry mass beautifully but want shade, so they belong in the piece that stays inside the house.

Scent is part of this gift rather than an accident of it. A piece set near a doorway changes the air people walk through, and that is the half of the gesture no photograph records.
The hottest week of the year
The season itself is the technical problem, not the celebration around it. Imported roses and seasonal peonies feel it first, since thin tissue gives out at the neck before the colour goes anywhere. Thick petalled material is what survives: orchid and chrysanthemum in particular. One habit is worth adopting on top of that, which is topping up the vase on the first evening rather than waiting for the usual second day, because cut stems in this heat drink more in that first night than across the rest of the week.

- book the early morning or the hour after sunset, never the middle of the day
- ask for a box with a soaked base rather than cellophane, so no stem sits dry in transit
- keep the piece clear of an air conditioning vent and out of the street celebrations entirely.
