Seventeen peonies in Phuket: the outer ring and the road behind it
A very large peony bunch does not fade evenly. It ages in zones, and the zone that goes first is always the outer ring. Knowing that changes what you ask of a courier.
Those stems were cut first and handled most, and once the paper is off they sit fully exposed to the air of the room. They also carry the heads that took every knock in transit, so any bruising on a bunch of seventeen is on the outside where it shows.
The centre is the opposite case. Heads there are shaded by their neighbours, they open more slowly, and they are still tight when the outer ring has begun dropping petals. That gap widens across the week. By the middle of the vase life the bunch has a blown edge and a firm core, which reads as untidy from a metre away even though most of the flowers are fine. Almost everybody throws the whole thing out at that point, and almost nobody needs to.
The edge is what the road touches.
Which is why the route matters here
Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin sit in the 90 to 180 minute window along the west coast. Villas, marinas and airport runs have their own slots. Anything on a longer slot goes out tighter, because the outer heads are the ones that rub on a bend, and a head marked in transit is a head that will go first in the vase.
Four things worth telling us along with the address:
- The district, and the name on the gate if there is one.
- Whether the handover happens indoors. A bunch of seventeen left standing in the sun loses its outer ring before anybody has looked at it.
- Which hour the flowers need to look their best, as opposed to the hour we deliver.
- Whether the bunch travels on by car afterwards.
Resort birthdays and anniversaries are the addresses we plan around a fixed hour, since the bunch is seen once and then left in a room. Airport arrivals are the hardest run for a count this size, because the flowers meet luggage, a car and a second drive before they reach water. Dinners by the sea fall between the two. Small weddings and family dates usually have somebody at the address all day, and that is the easiest case we get.
Rain from May to October and hill traffic in the evening both add time to a route, so we load those runs earlier in the day. The box stays shut for the whole drive, which protects the edge better than any packing material does.
Air on the island sits between 25 and 33 °C. That is comfortable for the flowers in the shade and hard on them in the sun, so where the bunch stands at the other end decides more than the drive did. A cool corner indoors buys days. An open terrace spends them.
