Five peonies in Phuket: what to settle before the courier leaves
Air here sits between 25 and 33 °C, and a small bunch feels that faster than a large one. Five stems carry no mass to hold the cool between them, so the box does more work per flower than it would on a count of twenty-five. Whatever gets decided about the stage, the room at the other end decides more.
Along the west coast Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin fall inside the 90 to 180 minute window, with separate slots for villas, marinas and airport runs. A bunch of five rides every one of those without trouble, since there is no outer ring of heads to rub on a bend.
Scenario decides more than distance on a count this small. Airport arrivals suit five stems better than any larger bouquet, because the recipient already has a bag in one hand. Dinners by the sea and family dates take them well, and the flowers go home afterwards in a car without any fuss. If the bunch is going to somebody else, it is worth knowing whether they own a vessel. Plenty of rented rooms and villas keep nothing suitable, and a small bunch delivered with no container ends up in a saucepan or sitting in its wrapping on a sill until the evening. People who have just arrived, anyone living out of a suitcase and guests moving between addresses all fall into that group. A jug does the job perfectly well, provided the stems are gathered at the neck. A wide bowl does not, because the heads slide apart and float outwards.

Three things to settle before we load
- Whether there is a container at the address.
- The hour, and whether the handover is indoors.
- Whether the flowers stay put or travel on.
Rain from May to October and hill traffic in the evening both add time to a route, and on five stems that extra time is felt at the end of the drive more than during it. A closed box holds its temperature for a while and then stops. That is why we would sooner move a small delivery to the morning than push it into a slow evening slot. On the shortest runs it makes no difference at all, and we say so when it does not.
Stage follows the same reasoning. For an evening handover we send the buds a little further open, since five tight green heads say almost nothing on the first night.
Space is the last thing worth planning. Five closed buds take almost nothing on the day they arrive and a good deal more by the third, so leave clearance behind the vessel as well as in front of it. A shelf out of the sun, away from a doorway and clear of the cooling flow will keep them longer than any shelf chosen for the view.
