### Autumn bouquets in Bali: a narrow palette and the room it lands in The autumn range is narrow and warm at every point along it. Ochre, rust, burgundy, bronze and a deep green run through almost everything in the group, which makes these bouquets easy to place in a room that already has timber and warm textiles. The same narrowness works against them elsewhere. Set against grey concrete, white walls and steel, a rust and burgundy bouquet reads as muddy rather than deep, and a paler mix carrying more green is the better answer in that kind of room. Light finishes the argument. These colours flatten under cool overhead lighting and come back to life under a warm lamp, so a corner with a table lamp is worth more to this bouquet than a bright sill, which shortens its life anyway. None of that is a matter of taste. Tropical foliage supplies the deep green the whole range is anchored on, and it is the one part of the bouquet that neither fades nor slumps while everything else ages. Build the outline out of it and the arrangement keeps reading as deliberate for as long as the leaf holds. Macrophylla hydrangea carries the muted end of the palette better than anything else available here. Its head is made of many small florets, so at a distance it registers as mass and close up as texture, which is the exact effect this group is built around. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm hold the silhouette once tied, and lisianthus keeps opening later buds for days, so the bouquet changes gradually instead of thinning out all at once. Orchids provide the single glossy note against all that matte surface, and one stem is usually enough. Seasonal peonies are the short-lived investment. Cut ends seal slowly, stems keep drinking through a long delivery, and a bouquet that would have needed rescuing in dry air arrives ready to stand. Dried elements are the opposite case, since they draw water straight out of the air, so anything meant to keep its dried half afterwards belongs in a conditioned room.
