### Summer bouquets in Bali: matching the flowers to the moment they are for Two situations produce two completely different bouquets out of the same catalogue photograph. One is handed over at an event and looked at for a single evening. The other goes into a room somebody is living in and has to earn its place across a week. For the event, ask for stems already open. A closed bud reads as unfinished to a guest who will never see it again, however well it would have performed on Thursday. For the room, ask for the opposite. Tight stems in warm air give the recipient the whole sequence: the flowers unfold in the vase over several days and the bouquet changes shape while somebody watches it. There is a real risk attached, because a stem cut too early can stall and dry closed, which is why the choice belongs to the workshop rather than the order form. Ranunculus is among the safest to take tight. It carries many layers of petal and opens slowly and predictably, so a closed head almost always finishes the job. Seasonal peonies are the opposite, and we only send them tight when the bud is already showing colour and gives a little under the thumb. Lisianthus solves the problem by itself. It arrives with buds at several stages on the same stem, so part of it is open on the day and part opens later in the week without anybody deciding anything. Macrophylla hydrangea has no stage left to wait for, since the head is open the moment it is cut. What matters there is firmness at the edge, and a papery rim means the head is going over regardless of what it cost. It also drinks through the petal as well as the stem, which makes it the most demanding thing in a warm bouquet and the first to show neglect. > "The question is never which flowers. Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm make the difference visible from across a room, since the head is large enough that closed and open read as two separate arrangements. Orchids outlast all of it, and tropical foliage holds the contour after the soft material has gone, so the bouquet shrinks in stages instead of collapsing at once. #### What the island adds to the calculation Warm air here is not seasonal in the way it is elsewhere, so the tight cut is close to a year round default. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and the humidity itself works in the bouquet's favour: cut ends dry slowly and a stem keeps drinking where dry air would have sealed it. Rain changes the handling. From November to March heads travel covered and the wrap comes off indoors, while the drier months from April to October put the sun back on the vehicle and move the good slots to the ends of the day. Distance is the other half. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit inside 90 to 150 minutes, which lets us send softer material with confidence. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run to 3 to 4 hours, and for those we shift the whole selection a stage tighter and lean on the sturdier heads. A ceremony at Jimbaran and a dinner in Ubud both want the open version, cut for the evening and nothing beyond it. A villa where somebody is staying for a fortnight, or a room at Nusa Dua, wants the tight one. Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, and the slot matters as much as the cut, because a bouquet standing an hour in midday sun loses days at the far end.
