#### The centre reports first
Look into the middle of the flower rather than at the petals. A dense multi-layered centre browns before anything shows on the outside, usually after a swing in humidity or a night spent beside something warm, and once it has gone the head will not recover. The neck under the head is the second thing to check, at delivery and later on. It should be firm to the touch. A heavy petal-packed bloom on a soft neck tips forward before it has finished opening, and in foam there is no way to prop it up. Both checks take a few seconds and both are worth doing at the door. Neither is visible in a photograph sent from the workshop. #### What the island adds
Humidity here swings with the day more than with the season, and an open cup notices that faster than a closed bud does. The drier stretch runs roughly April to October and the rainy months November to March, and neither changes the watering routine. What changes it is where the arrangement ends up standing. A cooled bedroom with the doors shut is the hardest room for this flower, and an open terrace out of direct sun is the easiest. A villa sitting room with the split unit on the far wall sits comfortably between the two. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap the basket firmly and pack a cooling element. We work 9 AM to 10 PM. For the long roads we plant a stage tighter. A bloom that opens on the way arrives at its widest and has nowhere left to go. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm carry the structure underneath. Macrophylla hydrangea holds volume between the cups, while ranunculus and lisianthus work near the rim where hands touch them least. Ocean villas, resort addresses in Seminyak and Canggu and dinners in Ubud take most of what leaves the bench in this shape. 
Outer petals bruise at the edges before the flower is finished, and taken off one at a time with fingers the bloom stays clean, smaller than it was but still worth looking at. A spent head is cut off level with the foam instead of pulled out by the stem, and the gap gets covered with a leaf, since foam does not seal itself and that spot no longer holds water. Baskets with garden roses in Bali reward one habit above all the others, so tell whoever receives it to put a finger on the rim each morning.
