Baskets with tulips in Bali: the last stage, and why it is not a fault

Tulip heads opening wide into a star at the end of their run, Bali

At the end of its run a tulip stops closing overnight. The bud opens right out into a star and shows a dark centre, and to almost everyone receiving one this looks like damage.

It is the normal last stage.

Saying so matters more with a gift than with flowers somebody bought themselves. A recipient who has not seen it before assumes something went wrong in transit, or that the arrangement was old when it left the workshop, and the basket goes out with the rubbish while several of the other heads are still perfectly good.

Orders start at 650000 IDR and we deliver 9 AM to 10 PM, in 90 to 150 minutes for Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur, and in 3 to 4 hours for Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas. Payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

"We put a line about the star stage on the card now. It saved more arrangements than any change we ever made to the build."

The daily rhythm before that

Before the last stage there is a smaller movement that repeats. The bud closes towards evening and opens again in the warmth of the morning, so the same basket looks tighter at night than it did at midday. Nothing has changed except the temperature.

In an air conditioned villa room that swing is gentle. On a terrace in a humid 30 °C it is fast enough that people notice it within the first day, and it is worth mentioning to anyone who has only ever seen these flowers indoors in a cooler country.

Care over the week

Water goes in at the rim, poured slowly until the block stops taking it, and cold from the tap beats warm. Once foam has dried right through it takes water back badly, and the flowers show that within a day.

Three things end one of these early here:

  • ripening fruit in the same room, since the gas it gives off drops tulip petals ahead of time
  • direct sun through glass, which heats the block through the liner
  • a fan or a vent playing straight across the heads.

A head that has gone over comes out with its stem, and the socket is covered with a leaf rather than refilled, because the block no longer holds water at that point. Doing that as heads finish keeps the bowl looking intentional instead of neglected, and it costs nobody anything.

Replacing a spent tulip with something bought locally does not work, which is the other thing worth knowing before the attempt. The old channel is wider than the new stem, water does not reach the cut, and the replacement is over in a day or two while everything around it carries on. Foliage laid across the gap does a better job than a fresh flower will.

Where these go on the island

Ocean villas and the resort addresses in Seminyak and Canggu take most of them, with Nusa Dua hotel rooms and Ubud dinners behind. The Jimbaran wedding venues order this shape when the tables have to stay low.

We pack firmly and add a cooling element above 30 °C, and between November and March the rain makes evening routes to Uluwatu and Tabanan longer than the map suggests. Morning slots are the reliable ones in those months.

Season is the other thing to plan around. Tulips run for part of the year and are thinner on the ground outside it, so a basket ordered for a specific date is worth confirming a few days ahead rather than on the morning.

Baskets with tulips in Bali are best ordered with the room named and the date fixed. The build, the stage of the bud and the delivery window all follow from those two facts, and every one of them is decided before the first stem goes into the block.
