Flowers in a box: the week you are actually buying

Every box in this section holds fresh cut flowers standing in soaked foam. That sentence sounds like a technical detail and it is really a promise about time: the arrangement lives the ordinary span of cut stems, roughly one to two weeks, depending on what is in it and on the room it ends up in.

Nothing about the format extends that. What it does is remove every task that usually shortens it.

Maintenance is one action

Water goes in at the rim, a thin stream, until the surface stops taking it. The foam layer is shallow and dries from the top down, so a warm room empties it faster than anyone expects, and the honest instruction is to pour each morning rather than to wait for something to look wrong.

Never pour over the heads. Water that settles between petals leaves brown edges within a day, and on the pale end of what we use, lisianthus or a soft ranunculus, it shows from across the room.

Heat is the other half of the equation. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we pack firmly and add a cooling element for the journey, and once the box is indoors the danger changes shape: an air conditioning draught pulls moisture out of petals faster than a shallow bed of foam can replace it.

Two boxes that look identical

A round card box also exists in a preserved version, where the heads are fixed to a dry base, drink nothing and last for years. In a photograph the two are difficult to tell apart, which is where most of the confusion in this part of a catalogue comes from.

The quickest test is weight. A box holding wet foam is noticeably heavier than a dry one of the same size, and a courier can tell you which one they are carrying. Scent is the second test, since preserved blooms have none at all.

Everything in this section is the fresh kind. That means it drinks, it changes over the week, and it finishes, which is worth saying plainly because the two versions sit next to each other in most catalogues.

What the island adds

Distance changes the calculation more than climate does. A box travels 90 to 150 minutes to Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur and 3 to 4 hours out to Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas, and unlike a wrapped bouquet it is drinking the entire way rather than waiting for a vase at the end.

Seasonal peonies, ranunculus, lisianthus and macrophylla hydrangea go in as short heads close to the foam, imported roses at 60 to 90 cm fill the upper layer, and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm are rarely used here because most of that length would be cut off. Orchids and tropical foliage cover the base so no wet block shows between the flowers.

Between November and March the rain matters at the doorstep rather than in the box. A sealed arrangement handles a wet drive perfectly well, but a courier still needs somewhere covered to set it down, which is worth naming when the address is a gate rather than a door.
