Red tulips: the most direct thing spring can say
A red tulip reads unambiguously. Where white is neutral and yellow is friendly, this shade announces romantic interest, and it does so without explanation in every culture that grows the flower.
That shapes its place in the range. Red tulips sell hardest through February and March, and for the rest of the season they give way to pinks and whites.
The differences inside red
The variation inside this one word is wider than it looks.
- Scarlet and vermilion. An open bright tone, the most visible from a distance.
- Deep crimson and burgundy. A cooler, denser colour that reads as formal rather than exuberant.
- Scarlet with a black base. Several varieties carry a dark blotch at the petal base, so the open flower shows a strong contrasting centre.
- Bicolours with a white edge. A graphic pattern that only appears as the flower opens.
Dark based varieties deserve a deliberate choice. Closed, they look like every other stem in the bucket. Open, they change the character of the whole bunch.
The practical side of the pigment
Red tulips lose less colour to light than yellow ones do, which is a genuine advantage over the course of a week. The pigment is more stable and the bunch stays saturated to the end.
The trade off is that fallen petals stain pale surfaces. A tablecloth, a wooden table or a bookshelf can take a mark that does not always come out.
So a bunch on its last days gets cleared away on time, rather than left until the petals start dropping on their own.

This colour registers more intensely than other shades, so the same stem count looks larger.
