Peony boxes in Bali: keeping one alive past the first evening

Water poured at the edge of the foam in a peony box on a Bali villa table

A box asks almost nothing of the person who receives it, which is why so many of them die on day three. Nothing has to be cut, nothing has to be arranged, and so nothing gets looked at either. The one job it does have is water, and that job comes round every morning.

The foam layer in a box is shallow and peonies drink hard. Three habits keep it going:

  • Pour at the edge, in a thin stream, until the top of the foam stops taking it.
  • Never pour over the heads, since water caught between petals browns the edges within a day.
  • Watch the cardboard, because a soaked rim loses its shape from the inside and the shell begins to sag.

Orders start at 650000 IDR. Payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Hours run 9 AM to 10 PM.

The last of those three catches people out here more than anywhere. Humidity is already high and the card is already soft. A generous pour finishes the job from underneath while the outside still looks dry. Do it every morning instead of twice a week.

Pour less than feels right.

"A box needs one minute of attention every morning. People give it fifteen on the first day and none afterwards."

Faded heads should come out as they go. Peonies shed all at once rather than fading slowly, usually across a single afternoon, and inside a closed field of heads it happens out of sight until the petals are already on the table. Lift the spent head and cover the gap with a leaf. Do not push a new flower into the hole, because foam does not seal itself and the old socket holds no water. The build is finished on the day it is made, and everything after that is maintenance.

Ants on the buds are worth a sentence, because they alarm people. They come for nectar on the outside of a closed bud and do no harm at all. A shake outdoors before the box comes into the room clears them.

The island around the box

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. Above 30 °C in high humidity we close the box more firmly and add a cooling element for the road, and all of that comes off the moment it lands. In the rainy season from November to March we add route time. A box takes that better than paper, since every stem is already standing in water.

Where it ends up decides how long the watering has to continue. A rented apartment in Seminyak or Canggu with one narrow glass cylinder on the shelf is the classic case for a box, because nothing in the flat would hold the flowers anyway. An ocean villa where the guests land after the delivery is the other. In both cases somebody other than the recipient is often the one who ends up pouring the water, so it is worth saying out loud who that person is.

Heat is what shortens the week here. A box on a table in full sun runs through its opening sequence in a day or two, while a shaded corner two metres away can add several, which is why Ubud dinners and indoor venues in Jimbaran do better than a terrace.

Seasonal peonies arrive in batches, so the stage of the bud comes from the delivery. Macrophylla hydrangea and lisianthus go in around them, cut short, with ranunculus near the rim and tropical foliage over the foam. Peony boxes in Bali are built on the morning they go out. Tell us the area, the hour and how long the box will stand before anyone opens it, and we set the planting for that.
