### Black roses in Bali: water is where the trouble starts A dyed rose is easy company while it stays dry. Add water to it and the same flower becomes something that has to be thought about, which is not obvious from a product photograph. This is the one thing worth knowing before a dark bunch is sent to anyone. A wet petal marks a tablecloth in seconds. It marks a linen napkin and a paper wrap just as fast, and the mark it leaves is a set colour rather than a wash that lifts out in the next laundry. Dry pigment on the same fabric brushes off with a hand. The difference between those two outcomes is a few drops of water, which is why the habits below matter more than they sound. > "Somebody always tells me they sprayed the roses to keep them fresh in the heat. That is the message I get about the tablecloth, and it is always the same message." > JFLOO florist Never mist a dyed bunch. However dry a room with air conditioning feels, a spray bottle is the fastest route to a stained surface, and it does nothing useful for the flowers either. Water belongs in the vase and nowhere else on these stems. That is the whole rule and it covers most of what goes wrong. Keep the vase off pale fabric and away from anything upholstered, since a drip running down the outside of the glass carries colour with it. When the surface underneath needs wiping, move the flowers first and clean afterwards. Doing it the other way round drags a wet cloth past a wet stem, which spreads the mark rather than removing it. Neither habit takes any effort once someone has been told. Dyed black roses standing in a plain glass vase away from pale fabric in Bali Roses dyed through the stem behave differently. They mark far less because the colour is inside the tissue rather than on the surface, though they tint the vase water noticeably in the first day and the cut end shows colour through its whole thickness. That tint is worth expecting rather than worrying about. It shows up on the first day, it is strongest at the bottom of the vase, and a full water change on the second morning clears most of it. After that the stems have given up whatever they were going to give up. Sprayed heads do the opposite and let go of a little more every time somebody moves them. #### What the island adds to this Rain is the part people do not plan for. From November to March a courier and a recipient between them have to get the bunch from a car to a table, and on some addresses that stretch is open ground. Direct water on a sprayed head does exactly what a spray bottle does, only faster, so in the wet months we hand these over closed and ask that the wrapping comes off inside. Villas make this simpler than it sounds, since the arrangement usually only has to cross a covered terrace. We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM. Heat matters for a duller reason. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element, so the bunch reaches the door cool, and a cool surface in warm air is exactly where beads of water appear. Give it a few minutes before unwrapping. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. Orders start from 650000 IDR. Deep burgundy roses on a covered terrace table at a villa in Canggu, Bali Payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. If none of the above sounds like something the recipient will remember, order the grown burgundy instead: black roses in Bali come in a version that needs no instructions at all, and it is the version we recommend for anyone receiving flowers at somebody else's address.
