### Green roses in Bali: what to stand them beside, and who actually wants them Cold white and cream give this shade somewhere to stand out from. Put a green head against either of them and it reads as a colour in its own right, which is the whole trick, because on its own it reads as a bud that never finished opening. Dark tropical foliage does the same job from underneath. It sets a lower boundary, and once the eye has that boundary the petal above it looks lighter and warmer than it did a moment earlier. Yellow is the one neighbour to keep out. It pulls on the same note as the rose, the shade dissolves into it, and pale lime greenery does exactly the same thing with even less warning. What we build with here helps. Macrophylla hydrangea gives mass without introducing a competing colour, and lisianthus carries the cool white note at a smaller scale. Three groups account for most of it: - villa owners and long stay guests choosing flowers to match a room; - restaurants and openings, where the arrangement has to sit on a counter for a week; - office and studio addresses, where a coloured bouquet would say more than the sender meant. It is a poor choice for anyone who counts on flowers looking like flowers, and an awkward one for a first date. Nobody says so out loud when it happens, which is why we ask about the recipient rather than about the colour. Weddings at Jimbaran and dinners in Ubud order the shade as table work rather than as a gift, and that changes the brief completely. Nobody unwraps anything, so the arrangement is built low and wide, and the green has to hold against linen for several hours in front of seated guests. On a terrace it fades while the petals are still firm. In a room with steady shade it holds its colour to the end. The drier stretch from April to October is the harder half of the year for the shade. Days are more even, the light is stronger, and vases on a villa tend to end up wherever the view is. From November to March there is less sun to fight, though the roads take longer and we plan the route around that instead. Above 30 °C and in the humidity that comes with it we use firm wrapping and a cooling element in the box. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90-150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3-4 hours, and green handles that stretch better than most cut flowers, since the heads are dense and the edges do not crease against the wrapping. Say what the flowers will sit against before you settle the count. A pale wall, dark wood and a table already holding tropical foliage all ask for different proportions, and green roses in Bali are one of the few orders where the surroundings decide the recipe more than the occasion does.
