120 cm roses in Bali: the wrapping is structural

Tall rose bouquet in a stiff paper and mesh cone in a Bali workshop

Packaging on a long bunch is not decoration and was never meant to look generous. A stiff cone of paper or mesh takes the knocks that would otherwise land on the outer heads, so a bouquet at this length carries noticeably more wrapping than a short one and every layer of it is doing a job.

The cone has to stand clear of the blooms rather than press against them. Pressed petals mark within hours and the marks brown at the edges, and on a bunch built to be looked at from across a terrace those marks are the first thing anybody sees. A cone that touches the heads is worse than no cone at all.

Humidity is what makes this a local problem rather than a general one.

Above 30 °C, in air that stays wet for most of the year, a fully closed cone works against the flowers. It holds warm damp air around the heads for the whole journey, and warm damp air is what opens a bud early and marks a petal where it touches paper. So the mouth of the cone stays open on a long bunch here, and the cooling element goes low against the stems rather than up among the blooms. Orders start at 650,000 IDR and close through DANA, QRIS or cash to the courier.

"The wrapping on a tall bouquet is the only part of it we can still control once the car leaves."

Carrying it, which is most of the risk

A metre and a fifth of stem is carried head backwards, over the shoulder, along a straight line. Corners are where the damage happens, and a villa entrance with a narrow gate is a corner even when it does not look like one.

Three things to ask about before a long bunch is sent:

  • steps between the gate and the door, since a cone has to be turned to get up them
  • how wide the entrance is, because a bunch turned sideways loses its outer heads first
  • whether the handover is outdoors, which decides how long the cone has to survive in the sun.

The courier does this without being told. The person who moves the bouquet afterwards usually does not, so it is worth saying out loud at the handover if the flowers are going any further than the room they arrived in.

Weight is part of the same problem. A metre and a fifth of stem under heads of this size is heavy enough that one hand will not hold it steady for long, and an arm that tires drops the cone against a doorframe without meaning to. Two people move a long bunch through a house comfortably. One person moves it badly, and the damage lands on the outer heads every time.

The road decides the build

Long roses being carried head backwards into a villa in Canggu, Bali

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, and Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 to 4 hours. At the longer distance the bouquet spends most of its life lying down, so the cone carries the whole weight of the heads against the paper for hours rather than minutes.

We build for that rather than hope through it.

Buds go out tighter on a long route, the cone goes on firmer, and the slot moves earlier in the day. In the rainy months from November to March we add time to the route as well, and a bunch heading into that weather leaves with an extra layer under the outer one, where it can get wet without touching a petal.

When it arrives

Take the cone off before anything else, and take it off upwards rather than pulling the bunch out through it. Then a fresh angled cut, deep clean water, and the leaves that would sit below the waterline stripped away.

The wrapping has done its job by then. Keeping it on because it looks good is the most common way people lose a day of the week they paid for at this length.
