Nineteen roses in Bali: what the road does after the bench

Nineteen roses standing in a delivery crate inside a van in Bali

A bouquet is finished twice. Once by the florist, who sees it upright on a bench under cool light, and once by whatever happens to it over the next hour in a car, at a gate and along a garden path. Nineteen stems sit at a comfortable point in that second stage.

Laid flat in a boot, any bouquet presses its outer heads against the floor of the car, and the marks show up as brown bruising on the petal edges within the hour. Roses bruise less readily than peonies, but the outer ring takes the weight of everything above it, and those are the heads the recipient sees first. Couriers carry this size standing, wedged in a crate or a bucket with a little water, and steady it by hand on the turns. A bunch of nineteen fits in a footwell without folding the wrapping. Larger counts start needing the passenger seat.

Heat is the other thing that happens in a car. Ten minutes in a hot cabin costs a rose more than a whole day on a cool windowsill.

A parked van is worse than a moving one. Air stops circulating the moment the engine does, and a bouquet that was fine at the last stop can be limp two addresses later without anything visibly happening to it. On a multi drop run that is the risk we plan around, which is why the long addresses go out on their own.

Four kinds of run on this island

Distance decides how much of that second stage a bouquet has to live through. We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM, the catalogue starts at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. The rest depends on where the address sits.

  • Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur: 90 to 150 minutes, and the bunch stands upright the whole way.
  • Berawa, Kuta and Legian: the same kind of run, where the wrapping usually arrives as it left.
  • Uluwatu, Tabanan or a remote villa: up to 3 to 4 hours, so the crate matters and so does the hour of departure.
  • A wedding venue in Jimbaran or a dinner in Ubud, where the flowers have to look finished at a stated minute instead of at some point in the afternoon, which moves the departure time more than it changes the build.

The rains run November to March.

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and both go in whichever way the bouquet is standing. A crate in a warm car warms along with it, so the cooling element does the real work on the long runs. The drier season, roughly April to October, is easier on all of this. It does not shorten the road to Tabanan.

Nineteen roses arriving upright at the gate of an ocean villa in Bali

There is one thing worth checking when the flowers arrive. Look at the outer ring of heads first, because flat or brown edged petals are the sign that a bunch travelled lying down somewhere along the way. Everything else about the bouquet can be fixed with water.

Imported roses arrive at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems reach 120 cm, and a long stem is a longer lever against the crate wall. On a three hour run that shows at the neck of the head, so for the far addresses we cut a little shorter unless the order says otherwise.

"Nineteen is the last count that stands in a footwell without folding anything. After that we start planning the car around the bouquet."

If 19 roses in Bali are going to an ocean villa or a Nusa Dua hotel, tell us the hour and we set the departure from it. A bouquet that leaves early and waits in a cool room comes out ahead of one that leaves late and waits in a car. Say which end of the island the address sits on and we build the run backwards from your hour.
