41 roses in Bali: splitting the bouquet, and the week that follows

Forty-one roses divided between two vases in a villa in Bali

Divided between two or three containers, forty-one stems stand looser, the water stays clear longer, and trimming them becomes three small jobs instead of one heavy one. A tight bundle forced into a narrow neck is the classic way to lose the inner stems, which press together and stop drinking while the outer ring still looks perfectly healthy.

Two containers beat one bad one.

Splitting also gives the flowers a second life later in the week. As heads begin to go, pull them out and rebuild what remains into one dense arrangement, which usually looks better on day eight than the original does. Say all of this when the flowers are handed over, so nobody feels they are dismantling a gift.

"Split it on the first evening, while the stems are still tight and pale. The middle of a bundle this size is where the week gets decided."

Living with the volume

Trimming is the job people skip on the first night. Two or three centimetres off each stem at a slant, made in one pass with a sharp blade, is what lets the flower take up the water it has just been given. On forty-one stems it takes a while, and it is the part of the first evening that decides everything after it.

Water disappears fast at this count. A large vase drops a visible amount overnight for the first two days, and a level that looked generous in the evening can leave the cut ends in air by morning.

Everything below the waterline has to come off before the stems go in. With forty-one stems that comes to a bin bag of leaves. Skip it and the water clouds within a day.

Then there is heat and light. A sunlit sill in the afternoon dries the petal edge within a day. A draught across an open room does the same more slowly and less visibly. A bouquet this size usually cannot be carried somewhere cooler at night the way a small one can. So the position chosen on the first evening is the one it keeps for the week.

What the island adds to that

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element. That is aimed at the journey, and the vase is still somebody's problem an hour after we leave.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur come in at 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. On the long runs the bouquet is out of water for most of an afternoon. That is the strongest argument for dividing it the moment it arrives, since two containers get every stem drinking within minutes.

Roses rebuilt into one dense arrangement later in the week in Bali

A wedding venue in Jimbaran is the one address where the splitting gets decided for you. The flowers are set out where the evening needs them, and whatever goes home afterwards arrives already divided between whatever containers the house owns.

Deliveries go out from 9 AM to 10 PM.

An ocean villa or a resort address in Seminyak usually has room for two vessels. A room at The Legian Seminyak or Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve has less, and the second container there is often a bucket standing in a bathroom, which nobody photographs and which works perfectly well.

The catalogue starts at 650000 IDR and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Imported roses arrive at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems reach 120 cm, and the longer cut is the one that most often needs dividing, because a 120 cm bundle wants a vessel taller than most rooms hold. Ordering 41 roses in Bali for a dinner in Ubud or a wedding venue in Jimbaran, tell us where the flowers go after the event, since that is usually when the split happens anyway.
