9 roses in Bali: the surface it lands on, and what to ask before ordering

A round bouquet of this size is built to be walked past rather than sat at. It wants a surface around chest height, where the top of the dome is the first thing the eye meets. Look down into the same bunch from above and the shape the florist built stops existing.

Villas make that harder than a flat does. Rooms are open, walls are few, and the surfaces on offer tend to be large and low, which is the one thing this count does not suit. The places that work are usually the ones nobody suggests: a ledge by the entrance, a bedside table, the end of a counter that people pass on the way through.

A kitchen is the warm room in most houses, and anywhere with sun on it is warmer still. A bunch that looked settled on the first evening is the same bunch looking tired on the third, and the table it stood on is the whole explanation.

Heat, rain and the length of the drive

The climate is humid tropical, with a drier stretch roughly April to October and rain from November to March. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element. Neither of those changes what happens after the box is opened, which is where this count is won or lost.

Distance decides the rest. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and we deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM. On the long routes we would rather send in the morning and have the flowers standing in water by midday than arrive at an address in the evening where everyone has already gone out.

Rain shortens nothing by itself. It simply means the last stretch from a gate is wet, so a box goes where paper would have gone.

What the wet months do change is where the bunch ends up. A handover in the rain gets carried indoors quickly and set down on whatever is nearest, which is how a bouquet built for a hallway spends four days on a dining table. The three things worth settling before you order

• What the recipient already owns, since plenty of homes have one narrow vase kept for a single stem and nothing else.
• Whether the bunch will be met at the door or left with somebody at a resort address in Nusa Dua or Legian.
• Head size rather than count: nine large densely petalled blooms fill a vessel that fifteen small ones leave looking sparse.

That first point has a clean answer when it comes out badly. A box solves the vessel problem at the source, because the foam holds the heads, the water is already inside and nobody has to go through cupboards during the first ten minutes of a visit.

Imported roses arrive at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems reach 120 cm, so the length is a real choice and not a default. Long stems suit a tall vessel on a floor, and there is no point sending them where the only surface is a low table.
