Single roses by the stem in Bali: spray stems, and whether the flower smells of anything

One spray rose stem with several small heads on a bedside table in a villa in Bali

A spray stem carries several small heads rather than one large one, so a single stem already looks like a small arrangement without anybody arranging it. That suits a desk, a bedside table or a narrow ledge, and it needs no company to look finished.

The heads open in sequence instead of together, which stretches the useful life of one stem noticeably. Take each spent head off as it goes and the stem stays presentable long after a single bloom would have been thrown away.

That sequence is the argument for a spray on a long stay. Somebody in a villa for three weeks gets more out of one spray stem than out of one large head, and the difference is not close.

"Guests ask for the biggest single head we have. Often what they want is a spray stem, they have just never seen one standing on its own."

— JFLOO florist

Scent is the other thing worth asking about, and almost nobody does. Most commercial roses are bred for stem strength and vase life rather than perfume, and a great many of them have next to none. In a large bunch nobody notices. On a bedside table at close range, scent is what makes one flower feel like more than a decoration.

Garden grades and the peony shaped ones are the usual answer. They are shorter lived, they arrive further open, and they are worth it when the flower is going somewhere it will be smelled rather than seen from across a room.

What the climate does to both of those

Air above 30 °C and high humidity bring a flower on faster than a cool room would, and that lands hardest on exactly the grades chosen for scent. A garden rose that arrives further open has less of its life ahead of it here than it would somewhere temperate, so we send those for the same evening rather than for the week.

A spray stem behaves better under the same conditions. Its heads are small, they open one after another regardless of the room, and losing one to the heat costs a fraction of what losing a single large head costs.

We use firm wrapping and a cooling element when the day is hot, and we deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur come in at 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, and that second figure is another reason a spray is the safer choice on a long route.

Where the stem is going

A single scented garden rose in a narrow vessel in a villa in Ubud, Bali

An ocean villa, a dinner in Ubud and a room in Nusa Dua ask for different things from the same order. The villa can take a spray on a shelf where it is passed several times a day. A dinner table wants something low and narrow at each place. A hotel room usually has one surface, and whatever goes on it is what the guest wakes up to.

Between November and March the last stretch to a door is wet, so single stems travel in a box rather than in paper, which also stops them rolling.

Scent has a practical side in an open room that nobody mentions in a shop. A villa is not a sealed flat, air moves through it constantly, and a perfumed rose that fills a small bedroom will do nothing at all on a terrace. If the point of the flower is the smell of it, the place to put it is somewhere with walls and a door, and it is worth saying so with the delivery rather than leaving it to chance.

The catalogue starts at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. One stem rarely reaches that alone, so it usually goes alongside something else or as a set for a table. Tell us whether the flower is to be looked at or leaned over, because those two answers point at different roses entirely.
