Kenyan roses in Bali: what the medium head buys and what it costs

The head is medium and the petal count generous for its size. That combination is the whole character of the group, and almost everything worth knowing about it follows from those two facts together rather than from either one alone.

A bloom like that holds its shape under pressure. It packs closely against its neighbours without creasing, so a dense round bouquet built from these has no gaps in it, and the surface stays even from any angle somebody looks at it.

Baskets and boxes are where it shows most clearly. Those are jobs measured by the area that has to be covered, and a large bud covers area quickly while leaving holes right down to the base, which then get filled with greenery that fools nobody.

Orders start from 650,000 IDR with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and this group is usually where a fixed budget goes furthest.

What you give up

The stem is lighter and shorter than a mountain grown long stem. Put it in a tall floor vase and the heads sit down at the rim, which looks like a mistake because it is one, and no amount of arranging fixes a stem that is simply not long enough.

It also opens more readily than a large headed rose. That helps when the flowers have to be fully out for a particular evening, and it works against you when they need to hold in tight bud for a week.

Both of those are answerable at the point of ordering, and neither is answerable afterwards.

The first three days

Change the water daily to begin with, and fill the vase deep rather than shallow: these stems drink hard while they open, and a shallow vase runs dry overnight without anyone noticing.

Recut on the slant each time the water goes, and pull off anything that would sit below the surface. Two minutes of work separates a rose that finishes the week from one that stops on Wednesday.

Where the vase stands matters at least as much in an open house:

• Away from the sun, since a sunlit position takes days off any rose and this one opens quickly to begin with.
• Out of a direct stream of cold air, which dries the outer petals from the edge inward.
• Somewhere the water level is visible, because in this heat it drops faster than people expect.

Heat and the length of the drive

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap firm and add a cooling element, and this rose takes that treatment better than most, because a firm petal does not mark where the packing presses against it.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. On the long routes we send the flowers a stage tighter, which suits a rose that opens readily anyway. Between November and March the rains lengthen a route without doing much to the flowers inside the box.

Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, and a morning slot is the better choice for anything going a long way.

Say what the finished bouquet should look like and how long it has to last, and the stem count sorts itself out. A round dense form for a table on Saturday and a bunch expected to hold in bud until the following weekend are two different orders, and only one of them should be built from this rose.
