Flowers in Bali: how the catalogue is sorted and what the island does to it

Imported roses and local orchids on a florist bench

The root sorts by flower first, and the build formats sit underneath it. Start from the flower when you know what the person likes, and from the format when what you know is the room it has to sit in.

Single-variety cards read fast: one stem type, one colour decision, no guessing at the filler. Designed arrangements are ones a florist has already balanced. Baskets and boxes hold the same flowers in a container that carries its own water. They suit a resort suite, a rented villa with three glasses, a table cleared at eleven.

  • By flower — roses, peonies, tulips, hydrangea, lisianthus, orchids, ranunculus.
  • By build — single-variety, designed arrangement, basket, box.
  • By size — stem count, then height: 60–90 cm standard, 120 cm Ecuadorian.

Imported roses and what grows here

Almost every rose arrives by plane, imported at 60 to 90 cm. Peonies, ranunculus, lisianthus and macrophylla hydrangea ride the same freight. The other half of the range grows here: orchids and tropical foliage. Monstera leaf, palm and heliconia cost less than air-freighted greenery and hold shape where imported filler collapses. A dendrobium spray keeps two weeks in a vase, and a potted phalaenopsis outlives most bookings.

Dry season, wet season

Humidity shortens a bouquet faster than heat.

Bali runs a drier season roughly April to October and a rainy one November to March. In the dry months the risk is sun on a west-facing terrace, where a midday bouquet is done by evening. In the wet months the air does it: petals never dry, and grey mould finds open roses and hydrangea first. Air conditioning settles most of it.

Above 30 °C, with wet air behind it, we wrap firmly and send a cooling element. What happens after the door depends on the room the flowers are carried into and how long the door stands open.

  • Two weeks and beyond — orchids, potted phalaenopsis, tropical foliage.
  • About a week — lisianthus, ranunculus, tulips and roses in a cooled room.
  • Three days — open roses, hydrangea and peonies on an open terrace.

"I ask what the room is doing, not what the bouquet costs. The same twenty-five roses read as generous in a cooled bedroom and tired in an open pavilion by Thursday."

One variety or a designed arrangement

The choice comes down to the address more than the budget. A villa with a long table takes a designed piece low enough to talk across. A wedding wants repetition: three flowers on every table, so the photographs hold together. A dinner in Ubud is smaller work, and open-sided restaurants make scent a real decision. Neither lisianthus nor ranunculus competes with the food. Lilies fill a room that has no walls to contain them, which is why they stay out of our table work up there.

Courier at a villa gate in Canggu

Single-variety works when the message is simple. Twenty-five red roses explain themselves at the door. A designed arrangement earns its price when the colour has to match a room you have seen only in photographs.

Addresses, hotels and paying in rupiah

Delivery covers the south — Seminyak, Canggu, Berawa, Kuta, Legian, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur and Ubud — from 9 AM to 10 PM. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur usually sit inside 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the far villas take three to four hours.

Island addressing catches people out. An address here is a road name plus a gang, the narrow lane off it, and both repeat inside the same kilometre. Send a dropped pin with the order. Where the villa sits behind a compound gate, say which one and who opens it, because plenty are bolted from the inside after dark.

Resort orders go through a front desk, so for The Legian Seminyak or Alila Villas Uluwatu we need the guest name and the booking. Weddings and long stays bring repeat orders inside one week, and anyone ordering flowers in Bali for the fourth time stops browsing the front page and filters by flower instead.

Prices are in IDR from 650,000, paid by card on the site or locally with QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA and cash to the courier. Bali is GMT+8, so book the slot against island hours. Before the courier leaves we send a photo over WhatsApp or Telegram, with a handwritten card in Russian, English or Indonesian.
