New Year baskets in Bali: the one format that lives at floor level
A vase claims a shelf. A basket asks for nothing, which is why it usually ends up on the floor, on a wide sill or at the foot of a hall mirror, in the part of a room no other flower format can use.
Floor level changes what the gift has to survive.
It gets walked past all evening, bags and coats brush it, and anything low and wide sits at exactly the height a small child or a dog investigates first. Wired items come out easily in a curious hand. Glass at the rim is the first casualty of any party. Candles standing at floor level are level with every passing sleeve, which is the one detail worth thinking about before the basket is placed rather than after.
So the corner matters more than the room. A spot the traffic flows around keeps a basket intact for a fortnight, while the middle of a walkway costs it something on the first evening.
In a villa here that corner is often half outdoors. Living areas open onto a terrace, the floor is tile or stone, and during the rainy season from November to March wind carries water several paces in through an open side. We ask where exactly the basket will stand, because a sheltered corner and an open one are two different lifespans for the same build.
What we need with the order
Four things decide the delivery, and none of them is the flower list:
- The district and the type of address: villa, resort, restaurant, apartment.
- Where in the room the basket will stand, indoors or on a terrace.
- A phone number that gets answered at the gate.
- The hour it has to be in place, which for a dinner is the hour before the guests arrive and not the hour the meal begins.
Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. For those we fill the tray on arrival, so the basket is not carrying its own water over the hill roads.
We work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+8. Orders start from 650000 IDR, and payment goes by QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.
Rain is a schedule problem here and nothing more, since a wrapped basket reaches the door dry. Above 30 °C we pack firmly and add a cooling element. An open weave lets warm air through from every side, and the tray heats faster than a closed box would.
The St. Regis Bali Resort, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, The Legian Seminyak and Alila Villas Uluwatu take the handover at the property. Wedding venues in Jimbaran order baskets in multiples, and matched sets are reserved with the growers ahead of the date rather than assembled from whatever arrives that week.
Inside the basket the work is done by imported roses at 60 to 90 cm cut short, macrophylla hydrangea for width, orchids for the parts that get looked at closely, and tropical foliage holding the outline once the blooms have been pulled.
"The question I ask about a basket is never which flowers. It is which corner, because I have collected enough of them off the floor of a walkway to know the difference."

New Year baskets in Bali suit an address where the gift stays put and belongs to the room rather than to one person. Send the district, the corner and the hour, and mark anything past Uluwatu or Tabanan so it goes onto the earlier run. If the corner turns out to be a terrace, say so, and we will build it to take a wet evening.
