New Year bouquets in Bali: ordered in the rain, kept long after the party

Festive bouquet in a closed box loaded for a rainy season delivery in Bali

New Year falls inside the rainy season here, which runs from November to March. That affects the delivery far more than it affects the bouquet, since a closed box ignores rain and a schedule does not.

Humid air is kind to cut flowers and hard on wrapping. Paper with a high collar softens and settles in damp conditions, so through December we usually set a firm liner under it and let the paper be decoration. Above 30 °C the box also gets a cooling element, because the container heats long before the stems inside it do.

Distance decides the rest. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. A wet afternoon stretches both of those. We build the long routes tighter and lower, and we cut them closer to the hour of the handover than we would for a short one.

Long roads make small bouquets.

What the road takes out of a bunch is easy to see the day afterwards. Heads that travelled loose rub against each other and bruise at the shoulder, and the mark appears a day later instead of on arrival. Hydrangea is the first to tell you, since its petal skin shows pressure that nothing else registers. Roses take the journey better and orchids barely notice it. So the longer the run, the denser the bunch and the more of its volume goes into foliage that can be knocked without consequence.

Orders start from 650000 IDR, paid by QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and we work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+8.

"The rain has never cost me a bouquet. Late gates, a phone that nobody answers and a road that turns into one lane, those are what cost me the hour."

Three mistakes we see every December

They come back every year, in the same order:

  • A large armful for someone who receives it outdoors and then has to carry a bag as well.
  • An intricate build for a recipient who travels on the same evening, since wired decoration catches on other people's clothing and long stems break at the tie.
  • Heavily scented flowers for a small villa room, where the smell has taken over the space by the second evening.

None of the three is a fault in the bouquet. Each of them is a bouquet built for the wrong ten minutes, and all three are avoided by one sentence in the order about where the handover happens.

After the party

Tropical foliage goes on standing long after the blooms have finished, which is the part most people throw away too early. Pull the spent stems out one at a time and let the rest carry on. Change the water every couple of days and recut the ends each time, because warm water clouds faster and a sealed stem stops drinking.

Ranunculus and lisianthus finish first in a festive bunch. Macrophylla hydrangea and orchids hold the longest, and imported roses at 60 to 90 cm sit between them.

The decorative parts have no expiry at all. Ribbons, wired ornaments and wooden elements come out of the finished bouquet and dry on a shelf. They wait there for the next season, which is more than most gifts of flowers leave behind.

New Year bouquets in Bali get ordered inside a few crowded days at the end of December, when every villa gate on the island is busy. Send the district, the hour and a phone number that will be answered at the gate, and mark the addresses beyond Uluwatu or Tabanan so we can put them on the earlier run.
