Fifteen peonies in Bali: the part of the journey nobody plans

Fifteen peonies standing upright in a delivery crate before a run in Bali

An armful of peonies is large, soft and top heavy, and it has to survive a car, a gate and a doorway before anyone looks at it. Most of the damage a bunch this size picks up happens in those few minutes. The flowers themselves are rarely the problem.

A bunch of fifteen does not lie flat on a back seat. Put it down and the heads on the underside carry the weight of everything above them, so they arrive creased, and a crease in a peony petal will not lift out once the petal has set.

So it travels standing. We wedge it into a crate or a deep box so it cannot roll on a bend, and the courier keeps it upright from the workshop to the gate. Heat is the second issue and the one people underestimate. A closed car parked in the sun warms up fast, peonies answer warmth by opening, and buds that left the bench tight can arrive half open with the outer petals already soft. Air conditioning pointed straight at the flowers is no better, since dry moving air pulls water out of the leaves faster than thick stems can replace it.

Five minutes of parking does it.

Roads and windows across the island

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, and those routes get the tighter buds, because an open head rubs against its neighbour on every bend. Distance decides the stage we send more often than the date does.

The seasons change the road more than they change the flower. Rain from November to March costs the route time, while the drier months from April to October are steadier, and either way the box stays shut until the address.

Four things worth telling us about the address:

  • The gate code, or the name on the gate.
  • Whether anybody will be there. A bunch this size left with staff or stood on a step goes down on its side, and that undoes everything the crate protected.
  • Whether the house owns a wide vessel.
  • Whether the flowers travel on afterwards by car, since a second journey means we leave the tie firm and the wrapping high around the outer heads.

Ocean villas and the hotels in Nusa Dua are the easy addresses. Someone is at the door. The bunch is standing in water within minutes of arriving.

Humidity, heat and the packing that answers them

Humid air suits a peony. Petal edges hold better here than they do in dry heat, and the colour at the rim lasts longer. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element. That slows fifteen heads which would otherwise all open on the same afternoon.

Where the bunch lives after the handover matters as much as the drive, though that part is a short conversation: a wide heavy vessel, a cool corner away from the window, water changed daily instead of topped up, and no hand on the open heads. Jimbaran wedding venues and Ubud dinners are the two cases where we ask what happens next, because the flowers usually leave with a guest.

"People ask how long the drive is. The question that decides the bunch is where the car will stand while somebody looks for parking."

We work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+8, orders start from 650000 IDR, and payment goes by QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

Tell us the address, the hour and who opens the door. Fifteen peonies in Bali arrive intact when somebody is expecting them, and they arrive marked when the crate waits in a car while a phone rings unanswered.
