Nineteen peonies in Bali: the handover and the weather around it

Nineteen peonies wrapped in kraft paper carried along a garden path in Bali

The climate here is humid and tropical, with a drier stretch from roughly April to October and rain from November to March. Humid air is easy on peony petals, and edges hold better in it than they do in dry heat. What moves the flowers along is warmth, and warmth is the constant.

Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element for the drive. That packing is built for the journey and it stops working the moment somebody opens it, which is why the handover itself is worth planning.

Peonies travel as tight balls, often with a green or dark edge on the outer petals. They open over the following day or two and gain a surprising amount of volume, so a bouquet that looks modest at the gate looks generous by the weekend. In this air the whole process runs faster than most senders expect.

Kraft paper suits this count better than a rigid hat box. The wrapping holds the dome in the shape the spiral was tied in, it can be carried under one arm through a lobby or across a garden, and it comes off in a single movement at the other end. A box turns the reveal into an unpacking. Nineteen peonies are large enough for that to cost something and small enough for paper to do the whole job. The heads also want air around them, and a closed box on a warm afternoon behaves like a small greenhouse.

The paper breathes on a warm afternoon.

"Every second bouquet here is handed over outdoors. I build the wrapping for a garden path, not for a hallway."

We work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+8. Orders start from 650000 IDR, with payment by QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

What the road does to the handover

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. The longer the run, the tighter the heads leave the bench, and the more the recipient sees a bouquet still on its way to looking like the order. Saying so at the point of sale saves a phone call the next morning.

Rain never touches the flowers and always touches the clock. From November to March we load the far runs earlier and confirm the hour again before a courier leaves.

Three things to settle before we tie it:

Peonies in their own container handed over at a Nusa Dua hotel in Bali
  • Whether the stems stay long or come down short.
  • Whether the bouquet needs its own water at the base.
  • Where the handover happens, indoors or out.

Long stems suit a house with a vessel and leave room to trim daily, which is most of what keeps peonies drinking. Short stems suit a bouquet that arrives in its own container, and that is the version we send to a workplace or to any address where nobody wants to go hunting for a jug. Ocean villas and the hotels in Nusa Dua usually have both a surface and staff, so the long version travels there without trouble. The choice is really about who does the work in the first few minutes after the flowers arrive.

Ubud dinners and Jimbaran wedding venues are the two cases where the bouquet leaves again with a guest. There we tie firmly, keep the paper standing high around the outer heads and cut the stems short, because a second car journey undoes a loose wrap.

Say where the paper comes off and what happens in the hour afterwards. Tell us the district as well, since the window changes across the island. We will set the stem length, the tie and the stage around those answers, and move the run to the morning if the address is a long way out.
