Five peonies in Bali: height, balance and the space they take
Set the vessel against the stems before cutting anything. The rule florists work to is that the heads should sit roughly a third above the rim, which puts the weight low enough that a knocked table does not send the lot over. Cut the stems to the vessel, since most people do it the other way round and end up with five heads waving above a narrow column.
Peony heads are top heavy once they open. A tall slender vase with a small base is the shape that tips, whereas weighted glass or stoneware with a broad foot carries the same bunch without incident.
The foot of the vessel matters more here than its height. Surfaces on a terrace or a veranda are rarely dead level, and a narrow base finds that out within a day. Stoneware, a thick glass cylinder or a jug with a proper foot all hold five open heads steady. Tall, light and elegant is the one combination to avoid.

Space is the other thing people misjudge. Five closed buds take up very little on the day they arrive and noticeably more by the third, because peonies open outwards rather than upwards, and five tight balls become five broad bowls that need clearance on every side. Leave room behind the vessel as well as in front of it. A dining table is the obvious place and usually the wrong one, since any surface in daily use means the vessel gets moved several times a day. Every one of those moves loosens the gathered stems and undoes the work the neck was doing.

The climate is humid and tropical, which suits peony petals and works against a small bunch in one particular way. Five stems have no mass holding the cool inside them, so above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element even for a count this size. Indoors the same logic points to a shaded corner over an open terrace. A hall console, a bedside table or a kitchen shelf away from the hob all hold the bunch without anybody handling it.
We work 9 AM to 10 PM on GMT+8. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours.
A bunch of five is the easiest thing we send on a long route. The heads do not press on each other inside the box, so Uluwatu and Tabanan get much the same stage as Seminyak does. Rain from November to March adds time to the run and very little to the risk.
Villas and the hotels in Nusa Dua usually have something with a heavy base, though rarely with the right neck, and a jug from the kitchen often beats the decorative piece in the living room. Five peonies read well in a small room precisely because they do not compete with anything else on the surface. A mirror behind the vessel doubles the heads and costs nothing. Ubud dinners are the exception we flag, since a bunch that leaves with a guest spends its first night wherever the next address can find room.
