Fifty-one peonies in Bali: built to be carried, not just built
Under about twenty-five stems a florist works in the hand, turning the bundle against the palm and tying it at one point. Peony stems are thick and stiff, the spiral has to stay shallow, and a shallow spiral at fifty-one stems gives a grip no hand can close around. So the bouquet goes onto a frame instead, and the frame is what the courier ends up carrying across the island.
That changes the order of the questions we ask.
The frame is also the handle
A frame holds the dome and keeps the load off the tie, which is the point people miss. Ribbon pulled tight around fifty-one thick stems crushes the lower ones, and a crushed stem stops drinking hours before anyone notices the heads have gone soft.
It also gives the courier somewhere to hold that is not the flowers. Carried against the chest with two hands, a bouquet this size leaves nobody a spare hand for a gate, a lift or a phone, so the address has to be solved before the van leaves rather than at the door.
Four things we settle before the build starts:
- The exact villa or hotel, and whether there is a gate.
- Who meets the driver. On a remote address that is the whole delivery, since a courier holding fifty-one peonies cannot go looking for somebody.
- Whether there is a vessel at the other end wide enough to take a tie thicker than a forearm.
- The hour, not the day.
Distances on this island are time, not kilometres
Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas away from the main roads run to 3 or 4 hours, and a large bouquet leaves for those addresses earlier than a small one going to the same handover time.
The crate travels upright the whole way. A dome laid on its side arrives creased underneath, and on a peony that crease browns by evening.
Kuta, Legian, Berawa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Ubud all sit at their own distance from the workshop, so the window we quote belongs to the address rather than to the island. When the handover hour is fixed, say so as you order. We would rather build early and hold the crate in the cold than have a driver on the road with fifty-one heads warming behind him.
Weather adds to both. Above 30 °C in humid air the flowers open faster than the schedule allows, so firm wrapping and a cooling element go in as standard, and from November to March we add road time for rain rather than promising a window we would then have to walk back.
Where these end up
Ocean villas take most of the large counts, followed by the wedding venues around Jimbaran and the resort addresses in Seminyak and Canggu. A bouquet of fifty-one peonies in Bali is usually meant to be seen by a room, and that is worth saying when you order, because a bouquet for photographs and a bouquet for a table are built to different depths.
