Flower Baskets in Bali

A basket survives the wait, which on this island is the point

Distances here are the first thing to plan around. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas stretch to 3 or 4 hours, and a gift that has to be handed to somebody in person turns that drive into a scheduling problem for both sides.

A basket does not have that problem. It is set down, and it waits.

Orders start from 650000 IDR, delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we add firm wrapping and a cooling element for the journey, and the top of the arrangement stays open, since a covered basket defeats its own format.

The construction underneath

Stems sit in soaked florist foam held in a lined tray, so there is no vase, no cutting and nothing at all for the recipient to do on arrival. Water goes in at the rim every day or two until the surface stops taking it. That is the whole routine, and it is the reason the format works on an address where the owner is away and staff are the ones who see the flowers.

Two consequences come with it. Stems are cut short to hold their angle in the foam, so nothing can be moved into a vase afterwards, and soaked foam is heavy, so the arrangement is carried from underneath with both hands rather than by the handle, which is woven for looks.

Weight matters more than it sounds. A large basket on a villa staircase, or across gravel from a gate to a door, needs two people or a smaller order.

The routine itself does not change with the season. The foam holds the same amount of water in February as in August, and the only real variable is how quickly the room pulls that water back out of it.

When something else is the better answer

Three situations rule the format out:

• The gift is handed over on a stage or held for photographs, where a wrapped bouquet does the job and a basket does not.
• The recipient enjoys arranging flowers, and the composition is already finished before it leaves the workshop.
• The evening moves between venues, since nobody wants to carry wet foam from a Jimbaran wedding to a dinner in Ubud.

The format earns its place in the opposite kind of situation. An ocean villa with nobody home until evening, a hotel in Nusa Dua, a house where the kitchen is still in boxes: those are addresses where flower baskets in Bali do something a bouquet cannot.

Seasonal supply changes the sum as well. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm lose a good part of their length going into foam, Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm are rarely used for this at all, and lisianthus, ranunculus, macrophylla hydrangea and orchids sit at close to their natural height. Tropical foliage frames all of it.

The rains between November and March do not damage a basket, but they change the handover. A courier standing at an open gate with a heavy tray needs somewhere dry to put it down, and that place is worth naming when the order is placed.

Give us the surface, the district and the name of the person who will be there. Those three answers decide the height, the hour and whether the arrangement goes out as a table piece or as something that stands on the floor.
